The Abelló family
1919: Juan Abelló Pascual founds Fábrica de Productos Químicos y
Farmacéuticos Abelló, by acquiring a small pharmacy in Madrid with
adjacent laboratory where he started producing medicaments.
1933: First permit to import 400kg of alkaloids from
India to produce codeine for Spain.
1949: Foundation of Antibióticos, S.A.
1966: Juan Abelló Gallo appointed Managing Director of the group.
1983: Disposal of Fábrica de Productos Químicos y Farmacéuticos Abelló to Merck.
1984: Increased stake in Antibióticos, another historical
portfolio company.
1987: Disposal of Antibióticos and other family pharma assets (maintaining Alergia
e Inmunología Abelló, S.A. and Alcaloides, S.A.) to Montedison.
1987: Acquisition of a relevant position in Banesto (today
Santander). Juan Abelló Gallo appointed Vice-Chairman. Position sold in 1989.
1990: Foundation of Torreal.
From 1990 to 2005, Torreal acted, mainly in Spain, as leading
investor or local partner for foreign families or international players.
Since 2005, Torreal started its international diversification.
Currently, the majority of its portfolio is outside of Spain.
